We are now in Georgetown SC. We have just arrived in this
narrow channel and although we wanted to grab a mooring ball, there was none to
be had.
Most are taken up by boats that appear to be derelicts that have
not moved for several years. This type of problem is quite common around
mooring fields. People are grabbing a mooring ball under the guise of taking it
long term, like a month at a time, and then they just walk away from them. It
is cheaper to pay for 1 month of mooring ball than to pay for the disposal of
the boat. The poor mooring field owners are stuck with removing the boat
at their expense or losing the rental income from that particular ball. Losing the income is the cheaper option! This
little guy for example, has an open hatch, no windows on the starboard side and
enough bird poop on top of it to start a garden!
This appears to be another
quaint little southern town,
but we are anchored right next to the paper mill.
A little noisy, but reminiscent of my childhood in Témiscamigue. Home of the Tembec paper mill.
Anyway we had a really nice cruising day, but unfortunately
I put out my back early this morning (no! not like that...get your mind out of
the gutter!) and I have spent most of the day whining about it. Jim has been
quite patient and helpful. This is unusual for us, generally if a back goes
out, it belongs to Jim! However it is my second time since being on this trip
and admittedly, I do not like it one little bit. Perhaps a glass of wine will
help. I think we will skip going into town today and
hopefully I will be feeling better by tomorrow so we can go check out the
place. Jim is currently doing an oil
change on the boat, so he's OK with skipping the exploring for now. He does
these every 200 hrs, and we are now at 216 hrs since the last oil change. For those
of you interested in statistics, we have traveled 4576 miles in 658 hrs, therefore this is our third oil change.
We saw a few interesting sites today. The first was a bobcat
swimming across the waterway. He was on a collision course with us and just as
we were about to hit him, he turned quickly and went back to shore. Poor little
thing looked tired too.
The second sight was a floating swing bridge. I guess
the waterway is too narrow for a ferry, so they developed this floating ferry,
it is nicely tucked into its dock, but if anyone wants to cross, then it moves
across the waterway, brings down some ramps and cars drive right over it. I
imagine it is cheaper than a regular swing bridge!
We also
heard some disconcerting stuff. The Coast Guard has been calling for assistance
in locating a missing sailboat for the last 2 days. Apparently this sail boat
took off from Maryland back on January 15th and was on route to the Bahamas. I
sure hope the folks on it are safe and sound somewhere and they just forgot to
call in their arrival. A little prayer, is always good n'est pas?
We left Jeff and Sue behind yesterday, but we got a message
from them today
that they will try to catch up to us tonight, I hope so, because
I do think a game of Euchre will ease my discomfort :) Hope y'all have a good
night now!
