We are now in Darien Georgia. Yesterday was a long cruise day
and we did not arrive at our destination until 7pm. By the time we had dinner
and settled in, I was just too tired to blog, so y'all get it today.
The wild horses on Cumberland Island graced us with their
presence yet again as we were leaving. Apparently they are a bit shy on the
island, but love to pose by the water way.
After we were out of sight of Cumberland island, we had a
relatively calm day until we reached our destination. One area we went through was a bit
disconcerting. Our travel guide tells us not to stop there as it is a secure
zone. Apparently this is where nuclear submarines choose to travel and we
stayed well away! There is a security boat posted along the area with a blue
light flashing, just to ensure we got the message.
Georgia has some pretty good tides, in some places up to 9
feet. I am sure when this fishing boat got to the dock, there was water under
his keel and in 6hrs he'll be floating again!
We stopped at Jekyll island for fuel and asked the attendant
for some information about anchorages and the like. He gave us a few options
but when I asked if there was enough water for our boat he kind of chuckled and
said, "you're in Georgia Mam if there's not enough water, all you got to
do is wait a while and it'll get there!"
Jekyll Island
looked like a lovely place, but the name made me feel as though I had no idea
when things would change into Hyde.
The mud channel we were coming up had a mere 5 feet in some
areas and we were awfully grateful for Gran Vida's depth sounder and shallow
keel. They took the lead and gave us data on depths so we would not find
ourselves hitting bottom, yet again. It was kind of cool to be behind them as
we watched a gaggle of seagulls attacking Jeff. Maybe it had something to do
with the "GRA VI" on the back of his boat. I think you need to replace a few letters
there Jeffie! Gran Vida got a lot shorter!
We ended up as I said in Darien. This is a cute little town,
so I'm told. Never saw much of it yesterday, but we will go explore a bit
today. High tide is at 8:44am, so we have until 9:44 to explore before the tide
starts to go out.
Our view for most of the day today |
