We started our day with a walk at 7am. We went for breakfast
at this lovely Pizza shop...yes they serve breakfast. As we were finishing our
meal, we spotted this gentleman starting to set up instruments. We asked the
restaurant owner if a band was playing here...now? He said yes, the band plays
every Tuesday morning. They start playing at 9am and the place is packed by
9:30am The band has 3 members ranging in age from 65 to 92! It's unfortunate we
were there so early, I would have loved to hear them play, but we had to get
back to the boat and get the engines running for the 10 am lock opening.
Our next surprise was that there were two other small boats
waiting to lock through the second lock we came to. So now we were 4 boats to
lock through and it was pretty tight quarters for the first three. We were
going in, two small boats in front and then two big boats in the back. The
issue was simply that the two big boats had very little room beside each other.
A 33 foot wide lock with tow boats who
were over 15 feet wide. If any wind came up, it would be impossible for us to
get in there without hitting each other. It took 3 locks but we finally got the
order figured out, and now we are going through by staggering the boats. One
small. one big at the front then 1 big one small at the back. It works fine, but
it does slow down our locking operations a great deal. We did not get as far as
we would have liked today, and will likely be much slower tomorrow as well.
When we got to lock 27, Young's point, we got our third surprise of the day.
We were greeted by the wonderfully bubbly and incredibly friendly Freya Petersen. Freya and her husband are the harbor host in this area, and she greeted us with home made jam and information about this area, all the way to the North channel.
Our forth surprise came a little later in the evening. We invited the people from the two smaller boats to come over for drinks after dinner. One couple from St-Catherine named Laurie and Jim accepted our invitation. As we started chatting, they asked who Jim's parents were. Turns out that they are good friends of Mom and Dad M and Jim and I have had the pleasure of meeting their parents as well. It's a small world after all! We had a lovely visit and both called their respective parents to let them know that we were currently having a visit. Too funny.

So tomorrow we will continue our way through all the locks
and hope to make it to Rosedale lock, although that is not likely! But we'll give
it our best.
Good night all.
