We are now in lake Huron. We set out today with a marine
report that was calling for rising winds and 1.5 meter waves as the day
progressed. So we plotted a short course to Providence Bay on the hopes of
getting there before the weather picked up. When we got close to there, the
lake was still calm (sort of) the waves were 1/2 to 1 meter but very livable so
we plotted out a course to the next 3 reasonable anchorages. We made it all the
way to the third one by 4pm and it was still quite nice out. We anchored anyway
because our next leg will have us crossing over to the states and it was quite
lengthy. The name of this bay is Misery bay but there is nothing we can call
miserable about it. The water here is absolutely stunning turquoise and clear.
So clear that we could actually see the anchor set in 12 feet of water. We
tried to take a picture of the anchor (pic below) and the picture does not do
it justice, but at least you get the gist of the colour of the water. This is
still very rocky terrain and every once in a while we saw the water turn
lighter and knew a shallow area was coming up (see second pic). Note the colour
change mid picture to the left. But when we got there, it was actually 19 feet
of water! The passage was not totally lonely either as a butterfly came to
visit us. (3rd pic). Today was very lovely cruising and I got to finish a long
overdue project; the new log book for the boat. I made the log book out of a piece of the original
main door of the boat so that even after we sell this thing we will still have
a part of it.
Tomorrow's weather
forecast calls for rain and winds up to 30km/hr so we may hunker down and stay
here for a second day. Our next leg is from here to Hammond Bay Michigan so we
will officially be in the US. We got our
quarantine flag out and ready to hoist as soon as we cross the imaginary line
in the water. For those of you who don't know, when you cross into another
country, you must hoist a yellow quarantine flag until you clear customs. Once
you clear, you replace the quarantine flag with a flag of the country you are
in. Etiquette says the flag must be higher than your own country's flag and at
least half the size of your own flag. We
of course have a US flag ready as well. That will be it for tonight. So we will post again
tomorrow.
Well done on the log book. The water is gorgeous
